Thomas Dambo

Thomas Dambo (Odense, Denmark; 1979) is the world's leading recycling artist. Since 2014, he has produced artwork with discarded materials in more than 20 countries on five continents, including the USA, China, Brazil, Australia, the UK, Germany, France, South Korea, Chile, and Puerto Rico.

Among Thomas Dambo's most famous works are his giant Trolls, made out of recycled materials. More than 185 of them have been built from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, from forests to deserts. He has also built more than 7,000 birdhouses all over the world. Some of his most acclaimed works include the Happy Wall (Beijing, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Rio De Janeiro, Santiago de Chile, Edmonton, Copenhagen, Roskilde) and the Future Forest (Chapultepec Park, Mexico City).

VISIONARY PARTNERS

Our Visionary Partners are the volunteers of the Stanwood-Camano Troll steering committee, and without them there would be no troll. They took an idea that began with the Daughters of Norway and turned it into a signed commission with Thomas Dambo. Since then they have scouted and planned the site, brought the City, the Chamber, Arrowhead Ranch and the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation on board, raised the first dollars, and organized every visit, meeting and gathering along the way, all on their own time. When the troll finally stands here, it will be because this group kept showing up. Thank you.

FAQ

The troll will make its home in the Stanwood-Camano area. Thomas Dambo is touring the proposed site this October with the steering committee, local tribal members and area historians, but the final location has not been announced yet. The committee is weighing access, parking, traffic and neighbors so the troll is a good neighbor from day one. We will share the location here as soon as it is confirmed.

The build is scheduled for October 2027. Thomas and his team design the troll from late October through December 2026, with pre-production in early 2027. Like all of his trolls, it will be built on site from reclaimed wood.

Yes, the troll will be free to view and visit. Thomas Dambo’s outdoor trolls are made to be found, and most of them are free to visit. Details on visiting ours, including access, parking and hours, will be shared once the site is confirmed.

The troll is funded by the community: individuals, families, businesses and foundations giving toward a $600,000 goal. Every gift goes to the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation, the project’s fiscal sponsor, and supports bringing the troll to life, from Thomas Dambo’s design and build to preparing the site for visitors.

Donate online, or mail a check to the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation, PO Box 1209, Stanwood, WA 98292, with “Troll” in the memo line. You can also become a partner, volunteer for the build, offer reclaimed wood and materials, or simply share the project with friends. Follow along at @stanwoodcamanotroll on Facebook and Instagram, or write to stanwoodcamanotroll@gmail.com.

Thomas Dambo is a Danish recycle artist who builds giant trolls from reclaimed wood. He has made close to 200 of them around the world, each with its own name, personality and story. His message is simple: there is beauty and value in what we throw away. You can see where his trolls live at trollmap.com.

The idea began with the Daughters of Norway as a way to celebrate our Scandinavian heritage. It also puts us on the map: Dambo’s Northwest trolls already draw visitors to Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island, Issaquah, West Seattle, Ballard and Portland. A troll here makes Stanwood-Camano the next stop on that trail and brings visitors through town to our restaurants, shops and lodging.

A volunteer steering committee, our Visionary Partners, leads the effort, working with the Daughters of Norway, Arrowhead Ranch, the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation and the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce. The City of Stanwood has formally backed the project with a letter of support.

Yes. The project is fiscally sponsored by the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, Tax ID #91-6036846. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.

Yes, and it means a lot. Dambo’s trolls are built from reclaimed materials, so local wood can become part of our troll’s story. Use the Contact Us button in the Get Involved section to tell us what you have.

Partnership levels run from $10,000 to $100,000, and each comes with recognition on the website, in project materials and at the opening celebration. See the partnership levels above, or write to stanwoodcamanotroll@gmail.com and a Visionary Partner will connect with you.
